We are to choose an art related theme and pursue it! Develop an idea in depth. Find out as much as we can from as many sources as we can find, etc, etc.

![]() My theme is wheat. I do not know why. It's always got my attention. My grandfather grew it on his farm. It is the basics in a lot of recipes to foods which man probably couldn't live without. I mean it is a basic staple to a diet in almost all cultures around the world. When I was in my twenties, I had to have a refrigerator with wheat images etched on the glass shelves. And my father's casket had a wheat design on the outside of it to dress it up. |

I did not know it was a part of the true art world until very recently when I found
and this picture in a book called: The Arts of the North American Indian. This picture is by T.C. Cannon (1946-1978). Mr. Cannon is a member of the Caddo Indian Tribe. This image exists as a painting, poster, and a woodcut. Behind the Indian you can see a picture on the wall. This is a picture of Van Gogh's "Wheatfield." I have since wondered why Mr. Cannon would pick a Van Gogh's Wheatfield to put in his painting. I have not yet found "Wheatfield" in a collection to share on this page. But, I have found others by Van Gogh! See below. |
"Wheat (Triticum) belongs to the Grass family, and has been cultivated since 5,000 b.c."

"Wheat is not difficult to grow. You can plant a small patch that will furnish part of your family's grain needs. The plant's straw can be fed to steers, used for bedding animals, employed as mulch, or simply turned under in the field to provide organic matter to the soil." -The Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening; 1978; p. 1203.
